Subtle Enchantments : Art Deco Australian Opal Fringe Necklace in Silver circa 1920

$ 98.33

Sold Antique moonstone fringe necklaces are a perennial favourite, perfect for those of us who believe in magic and enchantment. This fringe is a surprise in that the stones are not moonstones – they are jelly opals masquerading as moonstones! This example dates to the early 20th Century, circa 1920 and features subtly coloured jelly opals set in sterling silver. Each of the stones catches the light as you move for a delicate and shimmering effect that mimics moonstone. Manufacture:  Made in sterling silver throughout. There are no hallmarks present but the metal has been tested to verify that the chain and settings are all sterling silver. Each of the opal cabochons is spectacle set in a fine collet of silver. The fine fancy link chain has been extended with a section of silver trace link chain. It fastens with a bolt ring marked Sterling. The necklace features 13 natural solid jelly (translucent) opal cabochons. All of the stones are somewhat irregular in shape, as was common in necklaces of this period. Each of the stones has a unique glow, but they are well matched in hue and clarity, some with a moonstone-like blue glow, and others with unexpected swirls of colour. The cabochons are various sizes, the largest measuring 14.5mm x 9.2mm  and the smallest measuring 5.8mm in diameter. The necklace is 44cm / 17 3/4” long, including the extension. If you would prefer to be able to wear it at a longer length I’m happy to help facilitate this. The opal fringe section is 9.5cm long. The longest drop (at centre) measures 38mm. Weighs 7.27 grams. Condition:  In good antique condition, some signs of repair and several of the fine silver links are misshaped. All stones are set securely.
