Ephemeral Stars : Vintage Star Quartz in 9ct Rose Gold circa 1960

Sold Masquerading as a fine silvery moonstone, this large cabochon gemstone hints at its true nature when it bursts into a six rayed (and sometimes twelve rayed) star. This optical effect is known as asterism, and is most well known in sapphires, but can be found in other natural gemstones, too. (It is true that moonstones can have asterism, but their stars have only four rays.) This flawless star quartz, also known as star rock crystal, gemstone measures over 10 carats, and is set into a 9ct rose gold signet ring. Manufacture Cast in 9ct rose gold, there are no hallmarks present, the gold fineness has been verified by XRF and acid test. The bright and flawless high domed star quartz has been verified as a natural flawless quartz gemstones with double asterism by an independent gemologist. It has a faint blue hue giving it the appearance of a fine moonstone. Under a point light source (such as a torch or the sun) a single or double six-rayed star appears. The cabochone measures approximately 13.6mm x 12mm x 6mm – over 10 carats. The cabochon is rub-over set into a unisex rose gold signet style ring. The ring tapers from 12.5mm wide at the shoulders to 3.4mm wide at the back of the band, making it very comfortable to wear. Weighs 7.62 grams. The ring has been re-shanked at some point, a solder line is visible on one shoulder.
