Crystal Orb : Victorian Era Large Rock Crystal “Pool of Light” Locket in Engraved 18ct Gold circa 1860

$ 99.97

Sold Rock crystal is a marvellous gem – crystal clear and hard as rocks (because it is a crystal and a rock!). When fashioned into a cabochon it has mesmerising optical qualities, giving it an otherworldly glow and lighting up to create a ‘pool of light’. Pool of light lockets have the ability to magnify the lockets contents. This example was made before the invention of paper photographs, and was made to hold a slim three dimensional object – flowers or hair or possibly a painted miniature. In contemporary times I’ve seen them filled with gemstones and worn as a “shaker” locket – kind of like an exploded kaleidoscope. This example is much larger than usually found and has beautiful foliate chasing all the way around the perimeter. A scarce and unique treasure. Manufacture  Handmade in 18ct gold, there are no hallmark present. The gold fineness has been verified by XRF test. The two clear oval cabochon domes that make us each half of the locket have been assessed by an independent gemologist as natural rock crystal, aka clear quartz. Each of the cabochons measures approximately 29.25mm x 22.23 x 6mm, with a combined weight of 56 carats. The rock crystals are set in a thick 18ct gold frame that has gorgeous foliate chasing. The locket is hinged on one side and friction fits shut. The locket measures 38.25mm including the loop and bail x 25mm x 15.2mm. Weighs 14.38 grams. Condition  Very good antique condition, no faults to note. Ready for immediate wear.   View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Aurelia | Secret Histories Antique & Vintage Jewellery (@secret_histories)
